EUGENE RUGGLES - POET

The Wedding
by Eugene Ruggles

Think of the joy in the hands of the pastor
who has joined together hundreds
of men and women!

Think of the joy in the arms of the midwife
who has delivered hundreds
of infants!

Think of the joy that is bent into the shoulders of old men
beneath wool December sweaters just mended
by old women!

Think of the joy in the fingers and knuckles and wrists
and even in the fingernails
of the old women!

And think of the joy all these feet will leave behind
climbing from this pasture of horses,
after your wedding here today!
